You are what you eat. It sounds cliche, but it’s true. The types of food that you eat play a huge role in shaping your body, and so to burn fat, you will need to eat the right foods that will boost your metabolism so you can burn fat throughout the day. Without further ado, let’s get started.

Food 1 – Capsaicin

If you really want to burn that extra fat, then consider adding some spice into your diet. Studies have found that capsaicin –  that stuff found in spicy food – can significantly increase your metabolic rate.

Add a teaspoon of chopped up red and green chilis to your favourite meals to help reap the benefits of capsaicin on your metabolism. Experts claim that the simple change could increase the rate at which you burn calories by up to 23% for up to an hour after consumption.

Food 2 – Brocoli

Ever tried eating a bunch of fruits, veggies, and legumes to find them still pretty intact as they exit your rear end? That’s mainly because they’re made of fiber. Fiber is an indigestable substance that kind of ‘cleans your gut’ as it passes through, taking out old debris and accumulated waste that your body might not have been able to pass out.

But aside from its benefits for gut health, fiber has also been found to be great for metabolic increase. While we all know by now that fiber can’t be digested, your body doesn’t necessarily know that, so it will do what it can to try to digest and metabolize fiber as best as possible.

In effect, your body spends more energy trying to burn fiber than it does when it digests any other food that you consume. Chowing down on fiber-rich food can actually increase your metabolic rate by 5-10% depending on the quality and quantity of the fiber that you eat. Brocoli is a high-fiber food, which is why I recommend brocoli for boosting your metabolism and burning fat.

Food 3 – Dark Chocolate

If you just can’t help but reach for a snack every now and then, at least make sure you’re getting the right stuff. Chocolate has been found to contain flavanols and polyphenols – substances that help modulate obesity by optimizing the metabolism of both fats and carbohydrates, but not just any old chocolate will do.

Only dark chocolate choices –  such as those that do not use any sort of sweetener –  can provide you these metabolism boosting effects. So, make sure you’re not buying anything else. Typical milk chocolate which has been altered to better satisfy the palate can work against your weight loss and may not actually contain the same potent substances found in its unsweetened counterpart.

In the same light, it also helps to know that too much of any food can be detrimental to your weight – even if it’s known to speed up your metabolism. With any sort of food choice, make sure you consider portion sizes to maximize its benefits on your metabolic rate without over doing it. Stick to just a 1 ounce serving (25g) per day to avoid potential weight gain.
